Wanting to get to know him better, and upset by his dismissive attitude, she orchestrated a dinner with him and the film’s director. After dinner, she and Serge danced, and when he stepped on her toes, she realized that this man she thought arrogant was really very shy. That first night, he took her to a transvestite bar, then a club where the American blues singer Joe Turner sang, then to a Russian nightclub, and then to the Hilton Hotel, where the desk clerk asked, “Your usual room, Mr. Gainsbourg?” Nothing sexual happened that night, because he fell asleep, but very quickly they became inseparable. They went to Venice, stayed in a corner suite in the Gritti Palace, drank at Harry’s Bar every night, and fell madly in love. When they first returned to Paris they stayed at L’Hôtel, where Oscar Wilde had died. They then moved to Rue de Verneuil, where Serge selected every piece of furniture and designed everything in the house. “Serge had seen Dalí’s house and was very struck by the fact that he had black astrakhan on the walls,” says Jane. “So Serge wanted black on his walls, but he wanted it to be felt, the special felt that was used for policemen’s trousers. He could never take any change. After I had Charlotte, when she got so big that her legs came out of the crib I said, ‘I must buy her a bed, Serge, without offending your eye,’ and he said, ‘Put socks on her.’ I never saw him take a bath. He was the cleanest man I ever knew, he knew how to wash all the bits, but in 13 years I never saw him take a bath, I never saw him go to the loo, I never saw him completely naked, the children never saw him naked—and they tried like mad.”

For better or worse, popular music depends upon the existence of casual fans. Back when the big albums of the day were selling a few million copies, these were not purchased by a few million super-fans. Even when a band like Arcade Fire sells a “mere” 300,000 copies of an album, this does not represent an audience of 300,000 super-fans. Once a band achieves any measure of widespread success, that success hinges, somewhat paradoxically, upon catching the attention of people who aren’t really paying attention.

Today’s fan engagement schemes, however, deny the existence of casual fans by leaving them out of the picture entirely.

(CNN) — A rising Canadian folk singer was killed by coyotes this week in a national park in Nova Scotia, a park spokesman said Thursday.

Taylor Mitchell, 19, was at the beginning of the Skyline Trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Tuesday afternoon when she was attacked, according to Chip Bird, the Parks Canada field unit superintendent for Cape Breton.

Bird said hikers saw the coyotes attacking Mitchell and called 911. She was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, where she died about 12 hours later, he said.

Mitchell was recently nominated for Young Performer of the Year honors by Canadian Folk Music Awards. She was touring the Maritime provinces and had a break between gigs to go hiking Tuesday, her manager, Lisa Weitz, said in an e-mail.

“She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity,” she wrote.

“Words can’t begin to express the sadness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenomenally talented young woman,” Weitz said.

“Her warmth, loving nature, astounding artistry, and infectious enthusiasm will be so missed and forever remembered.”

Mitchell, who was originally from the Georgian Bay area in Ontario, lived in Toronto, Weitz said.

Bird said the area where the attack occurred is popular and well traveled. It remained closed, and park authorities had shot one coyote believed to be involved. A pathologist will test the animal’s body for diseases that might have triggered the attack, he said.

Crazy story considering we attended a live wolf event two days ago where there was a discussion regarding the absence of wolves in the northeast habitat, increasing size of coyotes as a result and the rise in coyote-deer kills…We also discussed the fact that wolves don’t attack people…but coyotes? in Nova Scotia? Woah…

If you’ve downloaded any of the Feelies shows I’ve posted in the past, you know that The Feelies are a magnificent cover band. Whether tackling songs by Patti Smith, Wire, R.E.M., The Stooges or, of course, The Velvet Underground, they manage to put their own stamp on anything they play. A Feelies cover song isn’t radically re-arranged, mind you — it’s just given that elemental Feelies feel. Some of these songs made it to the studio, while some of them ended up being live-only experiences.
